Whitehaven is an historical port and harbour town close to the most westerly point in Cumbria and situated next to the beautiful Lake District National Park.
The Whitehaven fishing community resides at the heart of the wider Whitehaven urban community. Fishing families are located within close proximity to the harbour and town centre.
In the UK, over three quarters of the boats in the UK fleet are under 10 metres in length, and most of these have little impact on the marine environment as they use seasonally diverse, selective methods that produce high quality fish. It is integral to the social, economic and cultural fabric of coastal communities and contributes 65% of full time employment at sea, along with many shore based ancillary jobs.
The Whitehaven Fishermen’s Co-operative fits firmly into this cohort.
